During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
