Uche Fuels Dominant Crystal Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding result that all but guarantees them a place in the Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second game in match.
A Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were no match against a mostly second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee waved away the protests.
The formerArsenal man did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still scope for improvement in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
