The team Vets Over-35s are located in south the city and compete in the Cheshire-based Vets League Top Division.

Their lineup this season boasts 9 former Premier League players, with a collective 1,801 elite appearances.

Famous Figures and International Stars

Ireland began playing for the side during preseason this season through close mate and current Wythenshawe teammate Blake Norton, and the ex- Irish midfielder then invited other ex-pros, who all play in a weekly small-sided match, to join in.

Former Senegalese forward Niasse, who netted twelve scores in sixty-five top-flight matches for the Toffees and even now goes to their home games, also had his first appearance against the opposition - who are located in the city and wear an Everton training kit as their strip.

"A friend Stephen told me 'come and have a game, it's a laugh'," said the striker.

"Then he informed me we were playing a side from Liverpool and the shock I had when I saw them wearing Everton kits - I say this is wrong for me!

"If you still love the game and you know you can still play, wherever you can play, what are you going to choose?

"The fans who turn up and see are happy and to give someone's day if they see us competing there and to pose us queries - it's more like the pleasure of us getting a place we can enjoy football, with organisation of course."

Such is the strength in depth at Wythenshawe, Niasse had his first game at defender.

"It's a bit unusual but then, I love sprinting and just move inside - I'm not defending that much," he said.

"I tell my defender 'I'm not staying' and that I'm just going to keep attacking.

"That running is what I'm after. It's good fun."

Along with Cisse's six scores on his first game, Stephen Ireland has netted eight in 3 games for the side, while George Boyd scored 5 on his first appearance and Lescott, a defender by trade, scored a hat-trick in one match as a striker.

Wythenshawe are top of the Premier Division with 3 victories from 3 and a goal difference of plus nineteen.

Paul Barrow, 38, who plays on the flank for the opposition, came up against former Latics full-back Figueroa on the weekend - and had to explain his young boy who Heskey was.

He has appeared at two global tournaments for Honduras, in addition to playing in over two hundred Premier League games.

"It was spreading like a rumor they had these ex-Premier League players," remarked the player.

"I think I was a bit starstruck playing against him to be honest.

"Even Emile [Heskey] got on and he's got 60-odd English caps.

"Our side held our own for a solid twenty minutes but then we had a player dismissed and it was hard.

"Our group really have not stopped talking about it - I was phoning my mother and brother on the journey home.

"They were all really nice, shaking our hands after the match - it was like facing a bunch of normal guys.

"Now we are eager for the return match."
