The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
